upgraded my debian testing system and now have font problems

I upgraded my system recently and now have font problems. For example, if I 
run gaim as non-root, it takes a password and then disappears, leaving:

	gaim: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libpangocairo-1.0.so.0:
		undefined symbol: cairo_scaled_font_get_f

In /usr/lib I find:

	lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root    29 2006-10-28 10:57 libpangocairo-1.0.so -> \
		libpangocairo-1.0.so.0.1400.7
	lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root    29 2006-10-28 10:57 libpangocairo-1.0.so.0 -> \
		libpangocairo-1.0.so.0.1400.7
	-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 29256 2006-10-13 11:30 \
		libpangocairo-1.0.so.0.1400.7

I ran pango-querymodules, and this helped some of the font problems in other 
programs. I tried reinstalling libpango1.0-0. But no change with gaim run as 
non-root. When I run gaim as root, it's fine, and there is no error message.
