Well, it would certainly slow everything down.  As for privacy, IIRC the
NSA recently admitted that they were (they claim they're not now)
monitoring all modem and BBS traffic.  And now that the Bill of Rights
(in US) has been officially shredded by the patriot acts, any agent can
come in and seize your computer on the suspicion you may be doing
something wrong.  There'd be a big chance of this if you were a Sysop of
a BBS on a private network.

That being said, I do occasionally get nostalgic over FidoNET, and the
BBS I used to run.
