Hi Pete, recently i got the same error. you have to remove the /usr/X11R6/lib line from your /etc/ld.so.conf and run ldconfig afterwards. i think the library directory X11R6 is no longer used in recent debian systems and there are residing old librarys which don't contain that symbol. hope it work for you too, gabriel
