Yes, this is an excellent use for Debian.

Since you are a Lunux n00b, I suggest that you install it on a spare
machine at home WITHOUT a GUI.  Relearn the CLI.

Pittsburgh must be crawling with college students who know Linux and
would be willing to help you.

Is "common sense" really valid?
