You sure can.  I would also take a look at adzapper as well, to get rid of 
those pesky advertisements and popups.

Excellent.  I run such a setup myself (though not in a school environment, so 
I don't have to worry about SquidGuard or DansGuardian, but I do know about 
using adzapper and squid, as well as setting things up to be a transparent 
proxy.
