Did you add the module(s) to /etc/modules ?
When I had a similar problem, I added
snd_pcm_oss
to /etc/modules
I am not sure whether you have to run update-modules after modifying that
file, but it can't hurt.
You mentioned mpeg123, did you mean mpg123? If it is not in Sid you could try
building it from Etch sources.
