Looking to why I get different results, perhaps this can help you debug:
~$ ls -l /usr/share/dict

~$ ls -l /etc/dictionaries-common/words

~$ dpkg -S /usr/share/dict/american-english
~$ apt-cache show wamerican

I can't remember installing wamerican manually... I would never have
done it just for "look."
