2.6.16-2-686 not booting: Waiting for root filesystem

Hello,

I helped a friend of mine with installing Debian by phone, that's why my
diagnostic possibilities are shortened.

After downloading the stable netinst CD, we installed sarge (using Kernel
2.4.27 or so). Then, we modified sources.list to use testing in the future
and did an apt-get dist-upgrade. Afterwards, we installed
linux-image-2.6.16-2-686 to make his touchpad run. When booting to 2.6.16,
the following message appears before dropping into a shell after some
minutes: "Begin: Waiting for root filesystem".

Now, I've googled around and found some suggestions, p.ex. to install udev
(which is already installed, version 0.093-1), to create a new ramdisk
using yaird (which doesn't work from 2.4 kernels) and to do so using
update-initramfs with initramfs-tools (which lead to no change). I also
checked menu.lst for the ramdisk to be present.

I often told my friend the Linux is a great operating system and he'd love
it, but I now have my problems to convince him ;-) As I feel a little
helpless now, I ask for your assistance. Thanks.

Greetings from Würzburg/Germany,
Peter

PS: If this should be a double post, I'm sorry. I tried several times to
post using linux-gate with no success, so I now use Gmane. Maybe, the other
tries will arrive someday. :-)
