1. From the console enter TUI of "aptitude"
("su -c aptitude")
2. filter (by "L") anything
from KDE and gnome metapackages, press "-" to delete it, then
"g" to summarize
3. You'll be shown extra long list of
red highlited broken dependencies
4. Re-select packages you really need
by pressing "+" on it. Don't forget about "kdm" or
"gdm" otherwise you'll loose windows manager
5. "g" to summarize, "g"
again to go
effect: KDE and gnome metapackages are
removed, you'll be no more annoyed with their dependencies
sub-dependencies of packages you selected
will be installed automatically
This way I slimmed my installation from
3 to 1,9 GB and now I have mostly what I really use. Till now (~two months)
everything seems OK

I'm using aptitude from the command line rather than
using the
menus.

So removing the metapackage actually removes no program but simply
disconnects them so they can be handled separately? How then would
you remove the entire metapackage?
I had tried
aptitude purge kde
and it seemed that nothing disappeared. In fact, the
result of
aptitude show kde
indicated that kde (I assume the metapackage) was
still installed.
Is this because the programs that were part of the package still
exist? If this is true, how would one delete the entire
metapackage?

My thoughts exactly. I want to save some of the Gnome
metapackage's
software, but delete gnome window manager and gdm. What's Gnome's
window manager package called? Gnome-desktop-environment,
gnome-core, etc. all have programs as a part of the package. Is it
possible to delete the whole Gnome metapackage, then install just
the individual programs that I need?
