if you are using debs, try to remove it, apt-get update && apt-get remove --purge wmaker && apt-get install wmaker

I use synaptic, and I purge a couple times wmaker regular sarge version and install it again.

any error messages should be in ~/.xsession-errors with gdm, thats where all of my wmaker errors are.

Here are the messages:

Well, mayhep we are closer to solution now?

all of those image files are in the wmaker package
jeffd@proto:~$ dpkg -S /usr/lib/GNUstep/System/Applications/WPrefs.app/tiff/menuprefs.tiff
wmaker: /usr/lib/GNUstep/System/Applications/WPrefs.app/tiff/menuprefs.tiff
jeffd@proto:~$ dpkg -S "/usr/share/WindowMaker/Icons/GNUstep.tiff"
wmaker: /usr/share/WindowMaker/Icons/GNUstep.tiff

I don't use synaptic, but a apt-get install --reinstall wmaker should fix that, I'm not sure what the synaptic method would be though.
