Are you sure it's not just bad disks? Recently I've had a crop of these,
from Verbatim. Admittedly they were cheap but I used them previously
without problems. This time I had about 1 in 5 fail. I spent a long time
suspecting software and hardware problems but in the end it came down to
the disks.
