hmm...if you're using exim, what's the setting
for
"smtp_accept_queue_per_connection = *"

in /etc/exim/exim.conf

The problem is my fault. I changed ownerships and permissions for /home and /home/tom trying to comply with the settings which the gdm login screen said were required for .dmrc. I put the settings back to their original values after the exim4 mainlog showed permission to change the directory to /home/tom was denied. I don't know what exim4 did with all the mail while the settings were wrong and gdm still can't use .dmrc but fetchmail & mutt are working together again.
