try using xmms-cdread, you can open directly the cdrom device with it.

with both libcdread and libcdaudio you can choose whether to read data and
play them (read cd data/digital audio extraction), or play cd audio directly
(analog, via cdrom-soundcard cable). IF one does not work, try using the
other one...
