You *should* have both in your sources.list.

deb ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian stable main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org stable/updates main contrib non-free

Or am I misunderstanding you?

Is "common sense" really valid?
For example, it is "common sense" to white-power racists that
whites are superior to blacks, and that those with brown skins
