It's probably a result of vim being more compatible with the classic vi,
when invoked as 'vi' instead of 'vim'.

You can fix this in a couple of ways:

a) always call it with 'vim' instead of 'vi'

or

b) create a ~/.vimrc file with the contents:

set nocp
