This usually happens (for me anyway) when the remote machine becomes inaccessible for whatever reason. If this is the case, then (e.g.) df will hang for about 1-2 minutes eventually completing. To fix this, do a "smbumount <mount point>" (which will take about 1-2 minutes to complete) then (as root) "umount -f <mount point>" Unfortunately this does not work 100% of the time.
