As root:
        apt-get install grub-splashimages
        cd /boot/grub
        ln -sf splashimages/gentleblue.xpm.gz splash.xpm.gz
        update-grub

There 7 premade splashimages in /boot/grub/splashimages once you install
grub-splashimages, you can chose whichever you want to use. Careful
though Not ALL video cards have the mode needed. (My GLINT-R3 card
doesn't)

Now if you want to create your own image please read the docs:

        $PAGER /usr/share/doc/grub-splashimages/README

Where $PAGER == less or more or tr or whatever you like.

And it is better to reply/ask a question on-list.
