mirror trouble

I'm trying to mirror sarge and etch, i386, main contrib non-free.

apt-get update (on any etch system on the LAN -- don't know about sarge yet)
says:

(excuse line wrapping, please)

The mirrors are maintained with debmirror via mkdebmirror. If I put
debmirror's remote source in sources.list, apt-get reports no errors. And the
security repository is OK.

If I look at Packages.gz with firefox (it evidently unzips it -- hexedit shows
the .gz is definitely not ASCII), there is no header at all; it starts off
with a package description. If I get a copy of the file, gunzip has no
problem unzipping it, so the gzip header seems OK..

I haven't looked at Releases.gpg.

Why do the local files (all the meta-files?) have "bad headers"; is apt-get
complaining about gzip headers or apt package file headers; and what can I do
about it?

TIA...
