I was experimenting with a different Linux distro, but... In MS Virtual Server 2005 running on MS Windows Server 2003, this error occurs if the CPU usage is throttled back. This setting located under resource allocation in the management tool. In my case, allocating 100% in the "Maximum Capacity (% of one CPU)" field eliminates the error.
