It sounds like you need the kernel-source.

Yes. The /usr/src directory should have a
"linux"-like
subdirectory.

You have to configure the source after you've installed it. Read the README file in the source directory. You'll probably want to copy your old config file to .config (in that directory) and do "make oldconfig".
