Thanks - dpkg -r, then apt-get -f install, got much further.  Way past
where it stopped before, so I think your suggestion fixed the problem. 
No errors were returned.  "dpkg -l desktop-base" showed it installed.  I
did "apt-get dist-upgrade", and it's continuing on right now.
