I upgraded the kernel from 2.6.12 to 2.6.15 and the USB icons now appear
on the desktop and get automounted as well.  All is well, but only with
the new  kernel 2.6.15.


That's good to know.

I also had the same problem, but only with some usb drives (most workedwell) - perhaps that might fix my problem as well.
