It is likely is not set up corretly. Would you like to view to X
server output to diagnose the probelm ?

YES NO

Nothig I do not do, notebook is jam.
Are you saying that you can not choose the "Yes" option?

What happens if you press Ctrl-Alt-F2?

If your machine is truly "frozen" (locked-up, seized, not responding), turn it off and then back on. When it starts to boot, if using lilo, then at the lilo prompt, enter "linux single"; if using grub, at the grub prompt choose the "safe" mode.

Once you've logged into Debian using single/safe mode, disable the automatic starting of X with the command "apt-get remove xdm kdm gdm wdm". Then "exit" from single/safe mode, and you should boot into a normal, non-X mode, at which point we can start doing some diagnostic work.
