I don't think the real cause is the _USB_ speed.

Try mounting your USB gadget with sync ('mount -o sync' or the "sync" 
 option in /etc/fstab) first.

Also, are you sure your files contents are damaged, or is it maybe your 
 gadget interfering with Linux' VFAT support, and the the file_names_ 
 aren't what the gadget expects? Try mounting your device as "msdos"
 ('mount -t msdos') instead of vfat (obviously no long filenames then,
 though).
