And I don't really want to use GDM. well you shouldn't HAVE to change. about a year ago I had this problem after a dist-upgrade. turned out I was missing the sticky bit on /tmp (maybeit was /var?) and this prevented X from getting past login. try chmod +t /tmp (or /var).
