Hallo Steef,

Evert,

This is an English list.
Translation:

In researching my problem: Linux Sarge, frozen mouse, I encountered your query/answer.
At the moment I have the same problem after a Debian Sarge installation.
What seems strange is that I cannot find a good answer to the problem.
Trial and error are not my favorite occupation because I like to understand where the error originates.

Hence my question: Has the problem been solved by you, where was/is the problem, in the kernel, X, or elsewhere.

to evert and hugo

first: i apologize for my late answer. i have been somewhat busy.

thanx *hugo* for your translation. your name suggested already some knowledge of my native tongue. if necessary: i'll answer evert offline in Dutch if he asks me to. S.

to *evert*:

i still do not understand [completely] the cause of this problem. just like you i like *to understand* what i am doing. i came to the conclusion that it a could be 'hardware-problem', allthough i do not have conclusive evidence for this.

in this case i was forced, some time ago, to work by trial and error, out of a *ceteris paribus* situation. my conclusions: it is not X. when i changed my sarge-kernel from 2.4.x to 2.6.x the problem disappeared immediately. i came on base of circumstantial evidence tot my conclusion that this nasty behavior of my (ImPS)-mouse is a hardware-problem because there were only very few complaints about a frozen mouse. the only other case i remember is a frozen mouse on a machine of a danish girl(?).

a couple of days ago i installed sarge (just to go up to sid; for fun) on another hd with the standard 2.4.x kernel on the same machine. and guess: the same problem!!! when i got rid of the standard kernel, and installed a 2.4.x kernel for an amd-athlon processor (k7, standard too), all problems were gone. i could reboot normally. (if i can spare some time i gonna build my own kernel to see if that kernel works, whether not).

well: i hope this little story is of *some* help.

so i guess it could be rewarding to sum up the hardware of our machines and see if their is a possibly identical critical point.
