This looks like a job for udev, which can assign meaningful names to 
USB storage devices.

Why it should not free up /dev/sde1 when you unmount it I do not know, 
I have never seen that problem here and I am forever using USB storage
devices of a variety of types.  Have you looked at /var/log/syslog to see
if there are any errors being shown?
