I don't know its history, but I understand the source of this type of
bias.

I suspect that's true - or at least in the ballpark - for 'nix-only
sites, and those perhaps not used to using automatic discovery
routinely. However, it's a very important feature for networks
migrating, or considering migrating, from Windows.
Nevertheless, I'd still like to see filesharing improved within Linux;
although Samba, together with Smb4k and SWAT, is pretty good. I'd just
like to see a bit more integration and polishing.
