Presumably s/had/hda, yes?  Ensure the ide modules are loaded at
boot.  In /etc/modules:

ide-cd
ide-generic

Note with a 2.6 kernel, you no longer need ide-scsi to access a
burner.  "cdrecord dev=/dev/hdc" works for me.
