I think if you upgrade to 2.6.12, use the upgraded hal and udev and use
gnome-volume-manager, you should be all set. If you are using KDE, IIRC
you cannot do that automounting stuff and you have to use
gnome-volume-manger even in KDE to get this done. Additionaly, you and
all users who want to use plugable USB drives should be in plugdev group.
