No Sound

Hardware  - Compaq evo N610c
Soundcard - Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. 82801CA/CAM AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 02)
Debian Release - Sarge
Kernel   - 2.6.13.2

Ran alsaconf and selected the:

intel8x0 Intel Corp. 82801CA/CAM AC'97 Audio Controller (rev02)

card, and had it modify the /etc/modprobe.d/sound file. It completes
successfully with:

========================================================================
Running update-modules...
Loading driver...
Setting up ALSA...done.
Setting default volumes...

===============================================================================

 Now ALSA is ready to use.
 For adjustment of volumes, use your favorite mixer.

 Have a lot of fun!

I next ran alsamixergui, it shows card as 'dummy', hmmm not sure that is
supposed to be dummy; but haven't found anything in /usr/share/doc/alsa to
indicate this is bad or how to change. Anyway I increased the master
volume to maximum.

However no sound yet.

More details:

# lsmod

# cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [Dummy          ]: Dummy - Dummy
                     Dummy 1

This sound card worked fine out of the box with woody/2.4.20.

One other clue is when I attempt to run alsamixergui as a non-root user I get
a popup window saying:

"alsamixer: function sound_ctl_open failed for default: Permission denied"

Any ideas what I am doing wrong?
