Yes, but you didn't give tar an output block size.

Try:
mt -f /dev/st0 setblk 32768
find /usr/kbmosas/std | tar zcvf /dev/st0 -T -b 64 -

(if the drive doesn't accept 32768, try 16384, and -b 32 with tar)

That way, the tape drive and tar both use the same blocksize.
