Red Hat's Xsession script runs the .xsession as a login shell
automatically.  This will cause the user's .bash_profile or other
environment scripts to be run as appropriate for the shell.  I think
it is the best method and one that Debian should also adopt.  And all
of this is documented in the quoted bug report.
