Getting a UPS working with Linux is easy. Get a UPS that is on this 
list: http://www.networkupstools.org/compat/stable.html
Then install nut and configure it according to the fine manual. On my 
system, the directions for getting it working were installed 
to /usr/share/doc/nut/README.Debian.gz.
