Problem with Thunderbird Inbox...

Yesterday when I retrieved email from my provider via POP3 using
Thunderbird, I noticed that there were some emails missing from
my Inbox.  I know this because I looked for one that I knew I
had not moved or deleted and could not find it.  So I closed
Thunderbird and looked through the Inbox file with both egrep
and vi.  The message that I was looking for *is* in the Inbox
file, but it does not show up in Thunderbird.

I tried deleting the Inbox.msf file, and Thunderbird recreated
it, but this did not help, there are many messages still
missing.

My Inbox file is quite large - a bit over 70Mb (I haven't
compacted it in a while...)

Any ideas about how to get the missing messages to show up
in Thunderbird?
