I am not an expert, but I do not think that you need a different kernel.
I believe that all the kernel modules that are needed for sound will
load on demand, if you have user-space things configured correctly. 
I never had sound for several years because I kept trying to install
more packages, thinking I had missed some necessary package. In fact,
I had too many conflicting packages, and some packages that inserted
mixers into the signal chain but set the default volume to zero. 
Especially look for conflicts between Gnome and KDE sound software.
Also, in KDE, look in the KDE system control center, Sound&Media, SoundSystem at
the AutoSuspend time setting. This should be as short as you can make it.
At least until you first hear sound and start tweeking for improved 
operation.

And, of course, make sure (on the same setup screen) that 'enable sound system'
is selected.
