Did you modify /etc/network/interfaces to configure the new device?

  auto eth1
  iface eth1 inet dhcp

For DHCP.  Or you could use something like the following for a static IP.

  auto eth1
  iface eth1 inet static
          address 192.0.34.166
          netmask 255.255.255.0
          network 192.0.34.0
          broadcast 192.0.34.255
          gateway 192.0.34.1
