Unable to enable IDE harddisc DMA on VIA KT 880, VIA VT 8237 chipset

[Please include my email address in replies]

Hi,

I was directed here from another mailing list.

I wonder if someone could help me get my hard drives running a a
reasonable performance. I installed a debian sarge preview in Jan this
year. See attatched install report if you would like to see the details.

I am currently runing 2.6.8-2-k7, if necessary I can try and get this
package from testing working:

http://packages.debian.org/testing/base/kernel-image-2.6.11-1-k7

I wanted to see if I had everything setup right first. Let me know if
you know this newer testing kernel has VIA updates.. (I could not find
any in the ChangeLogs on kernel.org for .8->.11)

My /dev/hdc is a Western Digital 180GB drive:

# hdparm -i /dev/hdc

/dev/hdc:

   Model=WDC WD2000LB-00EDA0, FwRev=15.05R15, SerialNo=WD-WMAEP1272292
   Config={ HardSect NotMFM HdSw>15uSec SpinMotCtl Fixed DTR>5Mbs
FmtGapReq }
   RawCHS=16383/16/63, TrkSize=57600, SectSize=600, ECCbytes=74
   BuffType=DualPortCache, BuffSize=2048kB, MaxMultSect=16, MultSect=off
   CurCHS=16383/16/63, CurSects=16514064, LBA=yes, LBAsects=268435455

   UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 udma2 udma3 udma4 *udma5
   AdvancedPM=no WriteCache=enabled
   Drive conforms to: device does not report version:

   * signifies the current active mode

now2g:/home/now3d# hdparm -d 1 /dev/hdc

/dev/hdc:
   setting using_dma to 1 (on)
   HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted
   using_dma    =  0 (off)

(you can see I was root. Also the drive was not mounted. When mounted it works fine, but is just very slow. I had with iwth DMA working on Mandrake 2.4.x kernel)

I seem unable to enable DMA, which means it is very slow to use.. and
causes my whole system to slow (even with nice -n19).

Kind regards
JG

Comments/Problems:

/dev/fd0 missing, and cd/dvd writing not setup. CD/DVD writer is:
_NEC    ' 'DVD_RW ND-2500A ' '1.06'.
This is an IDE model, which is on /dev/hda, I had to convert it to work as /dev/scd0 to write cds.
