I've done exactly that, quite unwittingly.
Somehow I installed the xorg package while obviously removing the xfree86.
Didn't know what had happened 'til I pulled up the graphical aptitude
interface and went through it to find out what I had left on my system.
Configured xorg, haven't had any of the problems I've seen here on the
list, and the changeover was that sweet.
Perhaps your problem is tied in more with the current server scenario?
