Unfortunately that requires a hardware hacking license. :-) There are simpler ways too. Tools like atop count writes to disks, or I could have used a well-placed printk in the SCSI driver, but I regarded the SCSI cable-pulling experiment (which also requires a hardware hacking license) as sufficiently conclusive.
