you still will be able to startx, kdm, gdm are only *logon managers*
they allow you to graphically logon to your computer. Removing them
will leave you with startx or startkde or startgnome etc etc as a way
to start the X server and Desktop enviroment that you have chosen .
If you want to keep the gui logon managers around, you can remove them
from /etc/init.d with:
to remove:
update-rc.d -f gdm remove
to put back:
update-rc.d gdm defaults
