All of a sudden my CPU started getting maxed out and I tracked down the culprit to evolution:

adam@gondor:~$ ps -eaf |grep evo
adam 3369 1 0 May29 ? 00:15:10 /usr/lib/evolution/evolution-data-server-1.0 --oaf-activate-iid=OAFIID:GNOME_Evolution_DataServer_CalFactory:1.0 --oaf-ior-fd=32

adam 27904 1 0 11:57 ? 00:00:00 /usr/lib/evolution/2.0/evolution-alarm-notify --sm-config-prefix /evolution-alarm-notify-ecTg1a/ --sm-client-id 11c0a801fc000111100952500000102530015 --screen 0

I don't use evolution, I use mozilla. How come evolution is going crazy? What is the alarm for?

Is there any reason not to apt-get remove it?

Nope. It may remove the gnome meta-package but this is harmless.

Thanks. It's still running 6 hours later I see. Obviously up the creek.
