Gnome Sound Recorder problem

I have tried both 2.6.8 and 2.6.10 kernels with ALSA
support and all ALSA OSS emulation options enabled for
my motherboard sound chip, a VIA 8233

When I try to record via Gnome Sound Recorder, I get the
following error message:

ALSA device "default" does not exist.

ALSA is otherwise working fine, for all my other apps.

One possible clue to the problem is that alsaconf
fails to find any sound device, but that does not seem to
affect other sound apps.

My motherboard sound chip is a VIA 8233 which is almost
correctly labelled in the Gnome Volume Control, where it's
labelled as a "VIA 8235", but the ALSA mixer and Volume
Control OSS mixer label it as an ALC650D. (I always took
that as a indication that the VIA sound chip was alicensed
ALC part.) Other than that I am stumped as to how to even
beging to debug this problem. Thanks for any help.
