Hi,
  as suggested by you all I have upgraded my system to bf24 and now am able to get a so so X. The X throughput is still not great.
But the 2 problems still come to haunt me time and again
1) I still cant install the intel dri driver package
The Xfree86 is ----

2) I still cant apt-get update (the same problem i.e. (1.0.0.0) hang persists.)
I suspect the route output will give you a clue ---
