The compiler is called g++, and if I have 3.3, 3.4, and 4.0 all
installed, I cannot make the default 3.4 without telling all my
configure scripts to use g++-3.4 (or c++) -- they default to g++.

piper:~> ls -l /usr/bin/{g++{,-3.3},c++}  /etc/alternatives/c++
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root    12 2005-03-29 14:27 /etc/alternatives/c++ -> /usr/bin/g++*
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root    21 2005-02-23 00:31 /usr/bin/c++ -> /etc/alternatives/c++*
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root     7 2005-03-29 14:26 /usr/bin/g++ -> g++-3.3*
-rwxr-xr-x  1 root root 95240 2005-05-07 11:08 /usr/bin/g++-3.3*
piper:~> dpkg -S /usr/bin/g++
g++: /usr/bin/g++

no alternatives system.
