This is the verbatim error message:
"The CD-ROM contains a non-Debian CD. Please insert a Debian CD to continue with the installation."
This was the common error received when using the cd I just burned using CDBurnerXPPro3 (found this software in a Debian installation manual).
I tried mounting a previously burned cd via the 'netinst' main menu, only to be haunted by this error message:
"There was a problem reading data from the CDROM. Please make sure it is in the drive. If retrying does not work you should check the integrity of your CDROM."
I recently tried the disks and cd on a Windows 98 machine (~8 years old) and encountered the same error message. Therefore, the error seems to be less a factor of an unsupported cd-writer and more a factor of burn quality/burn type. Although, considering both cd drives are very old (mine being ~6 years of age), I don't know how much can be ascertained from these findings. All of the Debian hardware compatibility lists I've looked at have been written somewhere in the range of years 2000-02.
As I've said: I've recently been able to boot directly from the 'netinst' cd but I am unaware of how to proceed from that point on. Any pointers are much welcome...
My cd drive is an HP CD-Writer Plus (technically: LG CD-RW CED-8083B).

I tried a variety of different procedures. The first cd I wrote to was the ISO, files not verified. The second was another burn of the image--data not verified. The third try involved extracting the ISO, burning it, verifying the disc and making it bootable.

Sorry, expanded=extracted.
An iso image should be burned as is. I've burned usable
CDs with Nero, so it is possible. Make sure you're creating
an image data CD.
Yes, as I figured was the case. I've burned operational cd's quite a few times with Nero as well but the Debian cd's I've created have never seemed to function as they "should."
Good choice. Once you get past the teething pains, you'll love it.
If I'm ever fortunate enought to get past the difficulties of installation... I'm sure I will love it.
I would like to again mention the question I had regarding DR-DOS when booting directly from the Debian netinst cd. I recently got this to work (much to my surprise) and I'm curious as to what exactly this involves...

I agree with him. With relatively bleeding edge hardware (SATA),
woody's likely too old. Not that it's impossible, but it's likely
more trouble than it's worth at the moment. I don't run bleeding edge
hardware, so woody's fine for me.

What did you do when you burnt the CD? I've used a number of netinst
