Also, are you running your commands in an expect subshell/script?

Ie: blah.expect

$ ./blah.expect

And blah logs you into the server?

Expect is NOTORIOUS for freezing ssh sessions if it comes upon the wrong
character during ls, tail, etc..

Try to run "strace ls".  It might give you a clue.
