No offense, but I think it is a very bad idea to do this.  If the
primary hard drive is developing errors, how can you trust its data? 
And you're talking about using this untrustworthy data as a base for a
clean install image?  That could lead to many problems and headaches
down the line.  Not to mention that subsequent systems may have
different hardware configurations, possibly needing reconfiguration
anyway.

On top of that, going to the trouble of burning the disk image to CDs
and then restoring to another disk will probably take a lot longer
than simply reinstalling Sarge.  Use the netinst ISO CD image, boot
it, install it, and you can have the entire system installed and
up-to-date in a couple of hours on a cable connection.  Installing
Debian nowadays is really simple and quick on a decent connection.  If
you want to install Sid to begin with, you can probably edit the
repositories when you install from the netinst CD before you begin the
download process.
