UDP is often faster on switched LANs. I am given to understand there may
be some recovery issues when using TCP, since the socket is no longer
completely stateless.

TCP does gain you bigger datagram sizes, though (32k is the default, I
think). I don't know how high it scales, but I remember reading
somewhere that you can support streams of up to 64k with the right
kernel tweaks.
