Which machine did you upgrade (the gateway, desktop, or both) and do you know 
whether the kernel-image package was upgraded by apt-get?  If so, had you 
been using a custom kernel of the same version and name?

If you don't know whether the kernel was upgraded, look 
in /var/cache/apt/archive/ and see if a kernel package is there.
If you have done an 'apt-get clean' since the upgrade, the new packages won't 
be there.

Can you ping the gateway from the desktop?  I believe you said in your initial 
post that you could not ssh to the gateway from the desktop; are you sure 
sshd is running on the gateway?
